Design Sensitivity Analysis Utility • Design sensitivity represents a change in response with respect to a change in a design variable, which is typically used for optimization. • Design sensitivity can also be used as a diagnostic tool to understand what components in the system (through associated properties referenced by design variables) have controlling influence on the response in question. • Traditionally, design sensitivity can be cumbersome to request for frequency response analysis. It can only be requested as a part of an optimization run, where multiple design responses have to be created for each frequency response at each analysis frequency; objective function and constraints have to be defined and set in specific ways to force sensitivity output at all analysis frequencies for all design variables. • In HyperGraph 2D, the Design Sensitivity Analysis utility allows you to plot and rank design sensitivity curves from an OptiStruct dsa.0.h3d file.

OrderCut Analysis Utility • OrderCut Analysis utility generates and post-processes engine order related data from an OptiStruct or Nastran frequency response analysis that contains either RPM-based loading subcases or order-based loading subcases. • Background, engine related noise, and vibration problems are typically linked to engine orders that are harmonic multiples of the engine’s fundamental firing frequency. • Understanding the order content of the problem signal is a way to identify the physical phenomenon that is causing the problem. • To solve the problem, you can adjust the design parameters to modify the engine operation, which in turn reduces the problem orders.

Reduction of Moving Masses – Streamlined Design for Improved Engine Performance

To expand the rpm range of a motorcycle engine, a new type of rocker arm with lower inertia was needed at KTM. The new rocker arm was required to have the same, or better stiffness and deformation level as the previous design. KTM used Altair HyperWorks™ for nonlinear topology optimization and nonlinear structural analysis to develop the new rocker arm. Thanks to this, the component inertia could be reduced by 15 percent, component mass was reduced by 21 percent, and the stiffness increased by 14 percent which lead to an extension of the rotational speed by 150-200 rpm.

Heavy Equipment Simulations: Multi-body, Hydraulics and DEM

For a Stewart-Gough-Platform (Hexapod), various software tools were used to study and design highly dynamic hydraulic drives together with an overall system control. Calculation of Eigenfrequencies, control design and comparison, hydraulic system design, and overall simulation control were done in Altair Activate, the mechanics of the Stewart-Gough-Platform was taken from a CAD model into Altair Inspire Motion. The co-simulation between control + hydraulics and mechanics was performed using Activate and Altair MotionSolve. Altair HyperView and HyperGraph were used to analyze and visualize the results. With the highly integrated solutions, the results could be achieved within a very short time. The different types of models (linear/simplified/full mechanics/hydraulics) made it possible to start with fast development cycles and finally achieve reliable results.

Melbourne-based Integrated Design and Engineering Solutions (IDES) provides full “systems-life-cycle” tailored engineering solutions to fulfill demanding defence requirements. Airbus Global Migration to Altair HyperWorks for Modeling and Visualization

To support the next aircraft development and new derivative programs, AIRBUS Commercial Aircraft division has chosen HyperMesh and HyperView pre&post-processing software developed by Altair. The Patran to HyperWorks migration project managed within the AIRBUS Engineering Airframe domain is seen as an important contributor to the Aircraft Programs development time reduction.

The first stream of this project is the replacement of Patran in its basic capabilities and the migration of specific AIRBUS functionalities, and the HyperWorks learning plan.

The second is about developments and enhancements around collaborative platform and simulation enablers.

On top of this project the vision of Airbus engineering is to drastically reduce the current product development plan by breaking silos and enhance cross collaboration between disciplines.

Automatic Generation of Thousands of Linear Loadcase Combinations for Efficient OptiStruct Static Simulations and Post-treatment with HyperView

During Cryogenics Pipes mechanical analysis (Liquid Oxygen, Hydrogen or Helium transport) automatic generation of load case combinations has been needed in order to avoid error from "hand made" combinations, to gear up the results analysis by simplification of data combination in HyperView (time to display results has been reduced drastically) and to avoid conservatism by simplification of the combinations.

This presentation deals with pre- treatment and calcul in OptiStruct of the unitary load cases as well as load case combinations creation and calculation by using special tool developed by Altair.

Multibody Modeling of Armored Car at Off-road Conditions using MotionView

In this presentation results of multibody modeling are compared to experimental results of a middleweight armored car. The car prototype which was built by Plasan Sasa, has a monocoque chassis construction to save weight. This version has dependent solid axle suspension type for both front and rear; the suspensions were taken from Ford F550 heavy duty truck and were additionally strengthened and adopted due to increased weight.

Detailed Nonlinear Model for the Analysis of a Wind Turbine Pitch Bearing

The mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms of a wind turbine pitch bearing are very different from those of other bearings types designed for traditional applications. On the one hand, there is the effect of the low relative stiffness of the surrounding elements such as the hub or the blades. On the other hand, the oscillating and low amplitude nature of its rotary motion favors certain specific failure mechanisms. Therefore, the approach taken by existing international standards does not match their actual behavior and that is why alternative approaches are needed.

This paper presents a methodology based on a finite element model generated by HyperMesh. Given the size and complexity of the model, the rolling elements have been simplified by their equivalent stiffness. This non-linear stiffness and its large displacements are considered in a non-linear calculation solved by OptiStruct. Its reasonable computational cost allows the analysis of the large number of extreme and fatigue loadcases. By means of sub-modelling techniques, other local phenomena such as the tensional state of the rings have been analysed. The information obtained through HyperView enables the verification of the behavior under extreme loads, life, fretting or core crushing.

Structural Optimization Based Vibro-acoustic Simulations of a Cableway Gondola

Cableways have been recently deployed in a large number of cities, as it offers many benefits such as low investment, low ecological footprint, ease of construction and high reliability. However, its integration in urban areas is facing new issues such as passengers' comfort and noise annoyance. Tackling these challenges, well-known in the automobile and railway sectors, requires optimization techniques able to manage unexpected dynamic behaviors while building innovative concepts.

Following their works in collaborative R&D projects DEFACTO and FAST, CT Ingénierie is developing structural optimizations based methodology for dynamics, using Altair software.

Here, this methodology is applied for building a quieter cableway gondola by considering and optimizing its structure, its interior furnishing and the air inside in a single simulation. Firstly, an identification of structural parts highly contributing to dynamic response is performed. Then, acoustic perception both inside and outside the cabin is reduced using structural optimizations of the entire gondola. Finally, it allows the embodiment of a quieter and more comfortable design proposal.

Application of Altair HyperWorks and APA Products in Design of Gas-Turbine Engines

The presentation will demonstrate case studies performed by Lyulka Desigh Bureau enterprise with the application of Altair HyperWorks software products, such as HyperMesh and HyperView. Strength and optimization analysis carried out with OptiStruct solver for parts of a gas-turbine engine being investigated will be shown. Amphyon software from Altair Partner Alliance was used for simulation of the additive manufacturing process for the parts of an engine, as well for the deformation prediction. The simulation results obtained with Amphyon are compared with the scanned model of the manufactured part to demonstrate results correlation.

For a competition launched for the Museum of the 20th Century, Zaha Hadid Architects re-invented a similarly radical approach by applying new advances in technology to generate structural and architectural expression. With Altair’s assistance, they created a plug-in for their design tool, enabling topology optimization. Altair HyperMesh was used for finite element preprocessing mesh generation, with Altair HyperView providing post-processing and visualization solutions. Structural analysis solver Altair OptiStruct provided advanced analysis and optimization algorithms.

Random Vibration Procedure and Best Practices

In order to evaluate if a design is robust and meets design margins, engineers use a variety of analytical tools. Often a product’s duty cycle is not perfectly characterized but the statistics of a lifetime of excitation are known. These excitations can cause fatigue when system level dynamics are excited. It is very important to understand how a system responds to these excitations and how natural frequencies interact with each other. Power spectral density (PSD) analysis, more commonly known as random response analysis, is used to determine stresses and strains in a system that is subjected to random excitations.
