International Student Teams to Use Altair Technology in Shell Eco-marathon

Students to design, build and race ultra-energy-efficient cars with Altair Technology

September 4, 2019 —
TROY, Mich. – September 5, 2019 – Altair (Nasdaq:ALTR), a global technology company providing solutions in product development, high-performance computing and data intelligence, announced it is an official technology partner in the Shell Eco-marathon program.

Shell Eco-marathon is one of the world’s leading energy-efficiency programs for students. It aims to push the boundaries of what is technically possible and inspire young people to become leading scientists and engineering innovators of the future. High school and university teams explore every aspect of design and technology to build their own ultra-energy-efficient cars, and then take them out on the track to compete.

Altair will provide its world-leading simulation and optimization tools used by the world’s top OEMs and suppliers, giving the students a leg up on real-world vehicle design and operations. Altair will also provide support and coaching to the student teams on its simulation and optimization tools.

“As a technology company committed to pushing boundaries and discovering industry firsts, we see the Shell Eco-marathon as an excellent platform where students have the opportunity to develop future mobility concepts,” said Dr. Matthias Goelke, senior director for business development academic markets at Altair. “They also learn the value of working in a collaborative, but competitive environment where they get to present their designs to a global audience. We are thrilled to support these brilliant young minds.”

“Altair makes a real difference for the students participating in the Shell Eco-marathon with its world-class expertise and leading software capabilities in technical design. Altair enables participants to enhance their performance in the competition, and ultimately contribute to the further advancement of the world's future scientists and engineering leaders. We are delighted to have Altair onboard as a valued partner,” said Natalie McDowall, global strategic partnership manager, Shell Eco-marathon and Make the Future Live.

Today, Shell Eco-marathon programs are held annually in Asia, the Americas and Europe and consist of two key competition types:
  • Shell Eco-marathon Mileage Challenge – Students compete to see whose car design can go the farthest on the least amount of fuel. The current Mileage Challenge record stands at 3,771 km/l – that’s the equivalent of driving from London to Rome and back again on just one litre of fuel.

  • Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship – The world's best UrbanConcept teams compete in an exciting global race to become the world's fastest energy-efficient driver. Qualifiers take place regionally.
In addition to the two main challenges, the program honors achievements off the track, including awards for vehicle design, communications, technical innovation, and safety.
