During the design of High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) manufacturing process, the expert knowledge of manufacturing engineers is essential as multiple decisions must be taken to design high-performance castings. In this presentation, we will demonstrate how the emulation of expert know-how through machine learning methods can aid engineers in designing better manufacturing processes. More specifically, we will present a case where the gating system of an HPDC production process is optimized to provide a homogeneous flow of molten metal with minimal turbulence. It is difficult to handle these design requirements with scalar functions as they result in either complex and/or over-constrained optimization problems. With Altair’s ExpertAI engineers can leverage ML methods to simplify the optimization setup and speed up the search for optimal gating system designs.
