ExpertAI: Enhancing Casting Optimization with Machine Learning

During the design of High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) manufacturing process, the expert knowledge of manufacturing engineers is essential as multiple decisions must be taken to design high-performance castings.

In this presentation, we will demonstrate how the emulation of expert know-how through machine learning methods can aid engineers in designing better manufacturing processes. More specifically, we will present a case where the gating system of an HPDC production process is optimized to provide a homogeneous flow of molten metal with minimal turbulence. It is difficult to handle these design requirements with scalar functions as they result in either complex and/or over-constrained optimization problems. With Altair’s ExpertAI engineers can leverage ML methods to simplify the optimization setup and speed up the search for optimal gating system designs.
