Altair® S-STEEL™

Design and optimize steel structures with S-STEEL, a comprehensive, integrated steel design solution. S-STEEL lets users code-check and auto design for both strength and serviceability to regional design codes, and supports composite beam design, staged construction, and numerous optimization criteria and constraints. Its transparent design results and engineering reports include clause references and equations deployed that target passing or failing steel members.

Design and Optimize Steel Members

S-STEEL is an integrated steel design module to Altair® S-FRAME® Analysis. With it, users can perform staged construction, composite beam design, and steel design based on results from static, response spectrum, time history (including base and multi-support base motion) and moving-load analyses. Users can also control how S-STEEL manages changes applied to analyzed steel sections before reanalyzing the structure.

Users can quickly locate and assess critical areas that require a redesign and select specific members using multiple filtering options. Display the design results to the level of detail required, or code detail format. Users control how S-STEEL manages changes to the analyzed steel members before reanalyzing the structure.

Design and Optimize for Code Compliance

S-STEEL helps users quickly locate and assess critical areas requiring redesign and select specific members using multiple filtering options. S-STEEL also lets users override section sizes for all members or a subset of members and immediately see if they pass or fail the code checks, and determine steel material quantities, optimizing weight, surface area, and other criteria.

Satisfy design preference while meeting code compliance with multiple design settings, including:

  • Regional design steel codes
  • Effective lengths for members in compression
  • Unsupported flange lengths for member in bending
  • Torsional end conditions for member in torsion
  • Steel grades and strengths
  • Connection types
  • Bending coefficients
  • Cost factors

Composite Beam Design

S-STEEL’s composite design process simplifies the analysis and design workflow, and lets users perform gravity design and lateral analysis on a single model. S-STEEL’s intelligent automation calculates the effective slab width assignments to account for overhangs and openings and determines camber based on different criteria. Users can also export customized engineering design reports include composite beam design information: stud layouts, section size, camber, and composite property deflection limits.

Staged Construction

S-STEEL also helps users understand their models’ strength and stability during and after the construction phase. Staged construction lets users compare two similar but different structures within the same interface to assess the design at each construction stage. Analyze and check code compliance for steel and concrete components and account for preload conditions.

Steel Design Reports

Users save time with customized engineering design reports in graphical or tabular format. Transparent steel design results quickly identify areas of interest and clearly explain why a steel member’s performance relative to design code provisions is flagged; users have the option to include all results and model information, or only the relevant results to the problem at hand, including:

  • Code equations with intermediate design values and clause references for each member
  • Force and moment diagrams for each check
  • Flagged governing load cases or load combination and clause for each member
  • Utilization ratios with a fail-flag when exceeding a prescribed design threshold
  • Design summary for each design group
