Improving Perceived Quality at CEVT - New Body Evaluation Method Enables Squeak & Rattle Prevention

Improving perceived quality and passenger comfort by minimizing buzz, squeak, and rattle (BSR) and eliminating unwanted noises in a car is a common challenge in vehicle development, especially as these issues are often detected late in the development phase. The new aspect to this challenge is the development of electrical vehicles (EV) that do not have a combustion engine covering up these small noises. Headquartered in Göteborg, Sweden, China Euro Vehicle Technology AB (CEVT) is a subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, a global automotive group including brands such as Volvo Cars, Lotus, and others. CEVT is an innovation center for mobility solutions, focusing on vehicle architecture. To facilitate and improve design choices early in the development phase, CEVT uses Altair solutions and multi-disciplinary optimization for a simulation-driven design approach allowing for rapid design iterations.

Altair Squeak and Rattle Director - Basic Screening Risk Assessment

Altair’s Squeak and Rattle Director (SnRD) enables expert and novice computer aided engineering (CAE) engineers to rapidly identify and eliminate squeak and rattle in products at an early design stage. By utilizing a novel set of tools and methods in a streamlined, semi-automated process that is fully integrated in the Altair HyperWorks™ environment, SnRD simplifies otherwise complex and time-consuming tasks.

Use Cases

It’s Time to Stop Operating in the Margins and Harness the Full Potential of Simulation

Dr. Royston Jones, Global CTO, Altair Consultancy, discusses how the global pandemic has been a catalyst for companies to harness the potential of simulation by reconfiguring their established design processes and traditional organizational structures. Technologies and methods that can deliver design feedback at the speed of development are already available; reducing expensive physical testing while injecting innovation into a company’s product. The rapid evolution towards a connected everything is having a huge effect on design. From autonomous and electric mobility to smart consumer products with new business models, development teams must now integrate simulations of controls systems into complex multi-physics models enriched by data captured by sensors in the field. Especially during concept development when rapid exploration of design ideas is essential, a full embrace of simulation will be essential to compete. The recording is about 19 minutes long, and was presented at the 2020 Global Altair Technology conference.

How CEVT Improves Vehicle Architecture and Eliminates BSR Through Simulation - Part 2

Improving the ESL using Complete Vehicle Correlation In the previous webinar, the development of an ESL has been shown based on a complete vehicle simulation. In order to validate this new approach, a comprehensive correlation work has been performed. Using the dynamic distortion in all closure body openings as correlation criteria offer a unique possibility to increase the understanding of the load from both the engine and the wheel suspension. This webinar presents this correlation where a test vehicle is driven on different test tracks both in reality and virtually. Presenter: Jens Weber | CAE Engineer, CEVT

How CEVT Improves Vehicle Architecture and Eliminates BSR Through Simulation - Part 1

ESL Development Based on Simulation - Application example The body stiffness has a major impact on the Squeak & Rattle performance of a car. Since the body structure of electrical/autonomous cars will differ clearly from traditional bodies, an enhanced requirement is needed to limit the distortion in the closure openings. This webinar presents a new approach of defining a requirement based on closure deformations using an equivalent static load (ESL), which considers both the reduction from a complete vehicle to a BIG and from a dynamic load to a static load. In addition, an example is shown how ESL can be used as input for body optimization. Presenter: Viktor Jonsson | CAE Engineer (Consultant), CEVT

Experience the Sound of Your Future EV Before it is Built

Achieving the targeted brand image in a short development cycle time with minimal or zero prototypes is a major challenge faced by EV companies. To overcome this challenge, Altair, HBK and Romax have jointly developed a simulation driven process coupled with capabilities to virtually experience the noise and vibration characteristics, giving engineers a way to obtain real time performance feedbacks as the vehicle is being developed. This joint presentation on the proposed NVH development process covers a wide range of topics, including benchmarking, target setting, full vehicle and motor gearbox simulation loadcases, troubleshooting, optimization and stochastic analysis, and playback of simulation results for subjective evaluations, with a number of new technologies representing the global best practice in sound and vibration design and development. Join us to explore ways to control the sound and vibration characteristics of the vehicle, achieve the right sound, and avoid common NVH pitfalls, while accelerating time to market utilizing and experiencing virtual NVH prototypes.

FIAT Customer Story

FIAT chose Altair ProductDesign as a partner to perform a pilot project to investigate squeak and rattle. The project focused on studying issues on the FIAT UNO, a vehicle made exclusively for the South American market. Altair ProductDesign suggested that FIAT implement Altair’s ‘Squeak and Rattle Director’ (SNRD), a comprehensive set of services and software automations that rapidly identify and analyze design alternatives to eliminate the root causes of squeak and rattle in assemblies. With customization from the Altair ProductDesign team, the solution provides a semi-automated approach to determine relative component displacements in the time domain that can lead to undesired noise. A dedicated four day workshop facilitated a fast ramp-up of the NVH team’s knowledge of the SNRD and helped Altair to identify FIAT’s specific design process that the solution could be tailored to.

Scania Customer Story

Squeak and rattle phenomena are studied in the automotive industry in an attempt to reduce the cabin noise and as a result, give a better ride quality and comfort to occupants. In the case of Scania’s Cabin Development Department, this kind of simulation was not performed historically. The team had to rely on tolerance calculations as well as the choice of materials to reduce the risk of squeak and rattle. To reduce development time and cut down on iterative changes, a desirable solution was identified that enabled a simulation-driven design process during the early stages of the cabin development cycle.
