General Motors: Cadillac – used computer-aided engineering (CAE) development methods to achieve 163.1 pound weight reduction on the Alpha architecture while still providing mass efficiency, stiffness, safety, and structural feel and while delivering improved fuel economy without degrading on-road performance characteristics.
Automotive Performance Materials (APM) and Faurecia – brought sustainable design to instrument panels, center consoles and door panels of the Peugeot 308 by integrating a natural, hemp-based fiber with polypropylene, which allows for complex shapes and architectures along with a weight savings of 20-25 percent.
The 2014 Altair Enlighten Award was won by Jaguar Land Rover for its approach to sustainability. Its lightweight vehicle strategy takes a holistic approach to CO2 reduction, linking strategies of weight reduction in the body and chassis systems to powertrain and related secondary weight savings, while maximizing recycled material use and lowering energy consumption during the manufacturing stage.
Crash Durable Adhesive (CDA) from Dow Automotive provides a reliable joining solution for multi-material designs enabling OEMs to use advanced ultra-lightweight materials to reduce weight and improve fuel economy.
BASF Corporation won the inaugural Altair Enlighten Award competition for the development of its thermoplastic composite front seat pan, manufactured for use in the OPEL Astra OPC model passenger car. BASF used virtual simulation technology to identify where material could be removed from the seat pan without negative impact to performance, allowing the weight of the component to be lowered by 45 percent (1.5kg to 0.8kg) compared to the original design.
Honda has designed the industry’s first single-piece hot stamped Side Opening Panel Reinforcement (Door Ring) that contributed to significant weight reduction and improved safety and fuel economy performance of the 2014 Honda Acura MDX.
Carbon Fibre Composite roof for the 2013 Viper GTS that is both structural and Class A. This component also satisfies FMVSS rollover requirements without additional metallic structural components.

Automotive industry engineers and product developers are pushing the boundaries of technology for better vehicle efficiency, performance, safety, and comfort. Increasingly stringent fuel economy, emissions and safety regulations, and the ongoing challenge of adding customer-pleasing features while reducing cost, are driving this development.

The 2016 Altair Enlighten Award (“Award”) is open to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), systems/parts suppliers and materials suppliers from all automotive industry segments, who are nominated (as defined below) for the Altair Enlighten Award (“Nominee(s)”). Altair Engineering, Inc. (“Altair”) and the Center for Automotive Research (“CAR”) are the sponsors of this Award (Altair and CAR collectively, the “Sponsor”). These Award rules govern the Award (“Award Rules”).
There are two separate categories to compete in this year:
For each nomination, the nominating team should select the category that members feel best suits their project. The judging committee reserves the right to re-categorize nominations. Additionally, categories may be added or deleted in a given year depending on the quality, quantity and type of nominations received.
By entering a Nomination for the Award, each Nominee represents and warrants that any information submitted to Sponsor does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party. Sponsor reserves the right to independently verify the originality and ownership of any Nominee’s Nomination, and to validate that said Nomination does not violate the proprietary rights of any third party. By submitting a Nomination, Nominee’s ideas, methods and materials may be made available to the public.
Nominees retain ownership of their Nomination(s), including all intellectual property rights which may exist in the Nomination. However, by submitting an Nomination, Nominees grant Sponsor the unconditional and perpetual right, license and consent to reproduce, encode, store, copy, transmit, publish, post, broadcast, display, and exhibit the Nomination in any media throughout the world, without limitation, and without additional review, compensation, or approval from Nominee or any other party. Sponsor shall have the right, to use Nominee’s name, product likeness, biography and other information about Nominee in connection with Nominee’s Nomination. By submitting an Nomination, the Nominee further agrees not to instigate, support, maintain, or authorize any action, claim, or lawsuit against the Sponsor, or any other person, on the grounds that the Sponsor’s use of Nominee’s Nomination as set forth in these Award Rules infringes Nominee’s rights, including, without limitation, copyrights, patent rights, or trademark rights. Nominee further acknowledges that the Sponsor is in no way obligated to protect any intellectual property rights which may exist in the Nomination. It is Nominee’s sole responsibility to secure any intellectual property rights which may exist in Nominee’s Nomination, whether before or after it is submitted.
Release and Limitations of Liability
By participating in the Award, Nominee agrees to release and hold harmless the Sponsor and its respective officers, directors, employees, and agents (the “Released Parties”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Award or receipt or use of any Award, including, but not limited to, any infringement of any third party intellectual property rights in connection with Nominee’s Nomination. Nominee waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.
The Award is subject to United States federal, state, and local laws and regulations and is void in Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and where prohibited by law. These Award Rules shall be governed under and construed by the laws of the State of Michigan without respect to conflicts of law principles.
