Analyze This: Validate Without an Analyst

Most traditional design processes start with an idea that a designer drafts into a product design. The designer submits the product design to an engineer who analyzes it, makes recommendations, and then sends it back to the designer for another iteration. The cycle continues until the product design meets all specifications.

Even though this process leads to good products, the time involved from idea to product to market is quite expensive. Time is in short supply and the success or failure of a product depends not solely on the product quality, but also the product getting to market as quickly and efficiently as possible. The scarcity of time motivates us to innovate the product development process by moving the critical CAE component out of the review phase and into the concept phase. This means enabling a designer to perform the initial CAE analysis on his design before he hands it off to an engineer for review.

Though this idea is impressive, it also brings complexity as the designer needs to learn a new suite of CAE software. For example, a typical powertrain optimization process requires a designer to arrive at a good initial mount layout and mount stiffness that satisfy stringent design and function requirements. To achieve these requirements, the designer needs to use multiple pre and post-processing and optimization software products such as HyperMesh, MotionView, OptiStruct, MotionSolve and HyperStudy. That’s a lot of software for a designer to learn, let alone become proficient at using.
What if it were possible to abstract the entire CAE software into one simple interface for the designer? The interface would include special building blocks that could automatically run the more complex suite of software. Here is the concept by Altair using HyperWorks Automate. The example is a multibody solution that is coupled with HyperStudy to achieve an optimized powertrain mount system for multiple powertrain options for a given chassis. The solution encapsulates the entire powertrain mount optimization process and seamlessly exposes it in Excel.

HyperWorks Automate allows designers to easily and efficiently bring an optimized product to market while achieving product specifications and requirements while also saving time and money. The simplified process allows designers to focus more on creating innovative products. Learn more about HyperWorks Automate and how it can improve your development processes.
