To support the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of a 70% CO2 reduction by 2040, Malin Marine Consultants (MMC), took the lead in the Marine Vessel Lightweighting (MariLight) project – a feasibility study to explore ship structure lightweighting to reduce steel use and propulsion power requirements. The study was led by Malin in collaboration with Altair, the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), BAE Systems and Lloyd’s Register, it was funded by the UK Government Department for Transport through the Innovate UK Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. The MariLight project aimed to replace traditional fabrication with large-scale additive manufacturing (LSAM) for lighter, optimized ship structures.
